When It Cannot Wait

What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-Out Tooth
Act fast – the tooth has the best chance of being saved if placed back within the hour. Gently rinse it and place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it in milk or saliva, then see a dentist immediately.
Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food lodged around the tooth. Take over-the-counter pain relief and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Chipped or Broken Teeth
Save any pieces of the tooth and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and visit the dentist as soon as possible.
Lost Filling or Crown
Use temporary dental cement or toothpaste to hold the crown in place until you can see a dentist. Keep the filling or crown to bring to your appointment.
Abscess or Infection
Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution and seek immediate care. Abscesses require prompt treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.

Pain that stops you sleeping or is not controlled by painkillers, facial swelling, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, bleeding that will not stop, or a lost crown or filling that has left a sharp edge. If you are not sure, ring and describe it.
Handle it by the crown, never the root. If it is an adult tooth, rinse it briefly and put it back in the socket if you can; if you cannot, keep it in milk or in your own saliva and get to us straight away. The first hour matters more than anything else.
Yes. Facial swelling means infection is spreading beyond the tooth and it needs to be seen the same day. If the swelling is closing your eye, or affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to A&E rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
No. We see people who are not registered with us, and you will be treated exactly the same way. If you would like to stay with us afterwards you are very welcome to.
